At The SEN Network, we believe every child deserves a tailored learning experience. Our specially designed classes in East Grinstead cater to toddlers, preschoolers and little ones with diagnosed or suspected Special Educational Needs. Led by a passionate and experienced SEN specialist teacher, our approach focuses on celebrating each child’s unique journey. With over 10 years’ experience working with children in Special Educational Needs, Illy brings her wealth of knowledge and passion to each and every class, ensuring every detail from the set-up, the props used, the class structure and activities are all planned to ensure the children who attend has the opportunity to learn, develop and thrive.

Our classes are intentionally kept smaller than many other activity-based sessions, ensuring they feel warm, flexible and not too overwhelming. With fewer children, Illy can offer individual support when needed and adapt activities to suit each child’s interests and developmental needs. This also allows us to incorporate additional tools, such as attention autism, for children who benefit from them.

Our classes combine child-led play with guided activities, creating a balanced and engaging experience for little ones. We start each session with a play-led section, giving children the chance to settle in, explore and become comfortable with the space and the people around them. Through play, the little ones naturally develop communication and language skills in a relaxed and supportive environment. It’s always so lovely to see them exploring and developing different skills through play, as well as having lots of fun!

Following this, the guided section encourages children to discover their senses through fun, guided activities. Each activity helps them move through alerting, organising and calming stages, supporting their sensory systems and preparing them to feel focused and ready for the day.

Why Choose Us?

Our classes are for little ones with SEN diagnosis or those with suspected SEN. We want to support all little ones who are on this journey which can be challenging and overwhelming and therefore we want to build a safe and nurturing community where we can support each other.

Our classes are offered by developmental stages, ensuring each child feels at ease while making progress. Our thoughtfully created activities are multi-sensory, designed to engage, alert, organise, and calm the little one’s curious minds. Each weekly session is packed with engaging tasks that enhance motor skills, language development and social interaction.

Our mission extends beyond learning as we aim to create a warm, judgment-free environment where families can learn and grow together. We encourage parents to ask questions and become an integral part of their child’s development.

We celebrate every milestone achieved by our little ones, no matter how big or small! Our aim is that the children feel valued, celebrated and loved after each session.

What happens in an SEN class?

Join us for weekly 1-hour sessions tailored for children with SEN or those preferring seeking a calmer class setting. Each class begins with child-led play, allowing everyone to settle in comfortably. This is followed by a well-structured routine that balances alerting, organising, and calming activities.

– Alerting Activities: Energise your child with specific tasks that stimulate both body and mind! Little ones will enjoy activities such as lively music, dancing, jumping, and action songs, sparking enthusiasm and focus.

– Organising Activities: Boost cognitive skills through engaging, multi-sensory tasks that promote teamwork and sequential planning. Children will tackle fun challenges like obstacle courses and balancing games, enhancing their coordination and problem-solving abilities.

– Calming Activities: We end our classes with peaceful exercises that promote relaxation and mindfulness. Through calming music, sensory stories, and gentle massages, we create a serene atmosphere that leaves children centred and calm.

Throughout every session, we use visual aids to maintain a structured and predictable environment, which is particularly beneficial for children with additional needs.

FAQs

What if my child prefers not to sit down or move around during the session?

That’s absolutely fine! Every child explores and joins in at their own pace. There’s no expectation for children to sit still – they’re free to move, observe or take part in the way that feels right for them. Our sessions are designed to be flexible and child-led.

What if my child is non-verbal or uses very little language?

All children are welcome, whether they use words, gestures, sounds, or other ways to communicate. We focus on connection, play and understanding each child’s cues. Our activities support all forms of communication.

My child doesn’t have a diagnosis – is it still okay for them to come along?

Absolutely! A diagnosis isn’t needed to join our sessions. Many families come because they notice their child benefits from smaller groups or are on a pathway to diagnosis. We welcome every child as they are.

My child hasn’t been to any structured groups before. What if they don’t join in with every activity?

That’s completely okay. Some children like to watch first, and others dive right in. There’s no pressure to do everything – we celebrate every small step and follow each child’s lead. The activities differ between freer and more guided/structured activities therefore allowing each child to join in at their own pace.

How do you make sure children don’t become overstimulated during the class?

We keep the environment calm and supportive, with plenty of space and time for breaks. We also watch carefully for signs that a child might need a pause, a quieter area or a change in activity. We have an area at the back of the room and outside the room for the little ones to take a breather if needed.

How big are the classes, and how long does each session last?

We keep groups small so every child can receive tailored support when needed. Classes have up to 10 children per session, which helps us create an inclusive class with a safe atmosphere. Sessions usually last around one hour, giving plenty of time to explore without becoming overwhelming.
